How it works

A walk, a conversation, and a plan you can actually use.

There's no mystery to it, and nothing to dread. A Yard Fluent consult is mostly listening, looking closely, and naming things out loud — so by the time we're done, your yard feels like a place you understand rather than one you manage by guesswork.

1. We start with what you actually want

Before we look at a single plant, we talk about you. Are the back beds overwhelming? Did you inherit a landscape you can't identify? Do you want more pollinators, less lawn, or just to stop killing the hydrangea? There are no wrong answers — and knowing your goals shapes everything that follows.

This usually happens in the first few minutes of the visit, coffee optional but encouraged.

2. We walk the whole yard, slowly

Then we go outside and walk it together, foot by foot. As we go, we name what's growing — the maple you thought was an oak, the "weed" that's actually a native aster, the shrub that's been pruned into a stump for a decade. We talk about sun and shade, soil and drainage, what's healthy and what's struggling and why.

You ask questions the entire time. The whole point is that you leave able to look at your yard and see it clearly, so no question is too basic.

3. You get it in writing

After the visit, you receive a written summary in plain language: an inventory of what you have, what each thing needs, a short list of what to tackle this season, and what can safely wait. Where it helps, we'll note specific plants by name and point you to trustworthy local sources.

It's a document you'll actually open again — not a sales proposal.

4. You take it from here

You do the parts that are yours to do, at your own pace, and you know exactly who to call when something new comes up. Plenty of folks book a quick seasonal check-in — spring and fall are popular — but there's no contract nudging you to. You're in charge now, which was the goal all along.

The practical bits

What to expect on the day.

How long it takes. Most first visits run 60–120 minutes, depending on lot size and how much you want to cover.

What to wear. Whatever you'd wear to garden. We'll be walking on grass, mulch, and the occasional muddy spot.

What to have ready. Nothing required. If you have them handy, a hose location and any plant tags you've saved are a bonus — but we work fine without.

Whether you need to be there. Yes, ideally — the value is in the conversation, not just the assessment. This is your yard, learned alongside you.

Let's be clear

What Yard Fluent is — and isn't.

We're advisors and teachers, not a lawn-care crew. We don't show up with mowers and a monthly invoice. We don't spray, dig, or install. What we do is help you understand your yard well enough to make good calls — whether you do the work yourself or hire it out knowing exactly what you're asking for.

If, after a visit, you decide you'd rather hand the work to a crew, you'll be a far sharper customer for it: you'll know what you have, what it needs, and what a fair scope looks like. That's a good outcome too.

Good questions

Before you book.

Do I need to know anything beforehand?

Not a thing. Most people who book with us start by saying "I don't know where to begin" — that's exactly who this is for.

What if my yard is mostly overgrown or neglected?

Even better. A neglected yard is just a yard with a lot to discover. We'll help you sort what's worth keeping from what's worth removing, and give you a sane order to tackle it in.

Can you just tell me what to plant?

We can point you toward plants suited to your conditions and goals — including regional natives — and explain why. We won't hand you a generic shopping list, because the right answer depends on your specific yard.

How much does it cost?

A first consult starts at $75–100 depending on lot size and scope. Full details are on the services & pricing page — we don't hide it.
